With a waffle in front of me and daylight coming through the window, I have very little interest in making this a quick stop. Dark wood frames the room, plants lean into the light, and the table fills with patterned china. These are modest details, but together they give Café Masala—茶洋館マサラ—the atmosphere I love. White teapots and fabric tea cozies are as much a part of the scene as the food. I come here because I enjoy being here. The waffles make that an especially easy decision.目の前にはワッフル、窓からは柔らかな光。こうなると、急いで席を立つ理由が見つかりません。濃い色の木枠、光に向かって伸びる植物、テーブルに並ぶ絵柄の入った食器。ひとつひとつは控えめでも、重なると私の好きなマサラの空気になります。白いティーポットや布のティーコジーも、料理と同じくらいこの風景になじんでいます。ここにいる時間が好きだから、また来る。その理由を、ワッフルがさらに強くしてくれます。
The family behind the welcome家族で支える、お店の温かさ
Much of the team, from the kitchen to the dining room, belongs to the family that owns the café. That is part of what makes Masala special to me. There is something reassuring about a place where the people preparing the food and the people bringing it to the table share that connection. On my return visits, the appeal is the whole experience: the food, the room, and the people who give it its character. Family ownership alone cannot make a café a favorite. Here, it is part of a combination that keeps bringing me back.厨房から客席まで、スタッフの多くを担っているのは、お店を営むご家族です。そのつながりも、私がマサラを特別に感じる理由のひとつ。料理を作る人と、それをテーブルへ運ぶ人が同じ家族だと思うと、安心できる温かさがあります。通うたびに魅力に感じるのは、料理だけではなく、部屋の雰囲気と、そこに個性を添える人たちを含めた時間です。家族経営という言葉だけでお気に入りになるわけではありません。マサラでは、それがほかの魅力と自然に重なっています。

The savory side deserves room in the conversation. One of my plates has a waffle folded around a substantial egg filling, tomato and greens, with a bright ribbon of sauce across the top. Another arrives open-faced, carrying cheese, leafy vegetables and savory toppings. There is plenty happening before dessert enters the picture. I like that variety: the same café suits a proper meal or a sweet break. If you arrive hungry, I would look at the savory choices first. A waffle this well occupied makes a convincing case for sitting down with a knife and fork.甘いワッフルの前に、食事系にも触れておきたいと思います。私の一皿は、たっぷりの卵、トマト、葉野菜をワッフルで挟み、上には鮮やかなソース。別の一皿は、ワッフルの上にチーズや野菜などの具材を重ねたオープンスタイルです。デザートにたどり着く前から、選ぶ楽しみがあります。食事をしたい日にも、甘いものと休憩したい日にも応えてくれる幅の広さが、私は好きです。お腹をすかせて訪れるなら、まず食事系を見てみるのがおすすめ。これだけ具材がのれば、ナイフとフォークを手にする理由も十分です。

Then there are the sweet waffles. My banana-and-chocolate plate builds upward: banana pieces around the base, chocolate ice cream in the middle, cream and mint above, and chocolate running over the lot. The floral plate provides the polite surroundings for all this enthusiasm. On another visit, cherries and scoops of ice cream give the waffle an entirely different look. This breadth of choice is one of the pleasures of returning. I can come back to a familiar room and still have a different plate in front of me. Choosing is a small problem, but a very agreeable one.そして、甘いワッフル。バナナとチョコレートの一皿は、上へ上へと楽しさが積み重なっています。バナナに囲まれたチョコレートアイス、その上にクリームとミント、全体を走るチョコレート。花柄の上品なお皿が、そのにぎやかさを受け止めています。別の日には、チェリーとアイスクリームが主役のワッフルを楽しみました。同じテーブルでも、目の前の一皿は違う。何度も通う楽しさは、この選択肢の多さにもあります。どれにするか悩むのも、ここではうれしい時間です。
Give the tea its own moment紅茶にも、選ぶ楽しみを
The tea deserves a decision of its own. In my photographs, orange slices float in the cup while a white pot sits close by, with a strainer and a fabric cozy completing the arrangement. I love how much of the table the tea is allowed to occupy. The published menu ranges from Darjeeling and Earl Grey to spiced milk teas; coffee drinkers have their own selection, too. With so many flavors to consider, I would choose the drink as carefully as the waffle. Here, the cup is an important part of the reason to stay.紅茶も、きちんと時間をかけて選びたい存在です。写真のカップにはオレンジが浮かび、そばには白いポットと茶こし、布のティーコジー。紅茶のためにテーブルの一角がしっかり用意されている、その様子も私は好きです。公式メニューにはダージリンやアールグレイ、スパイスを使ったミルクティーが並び、コーヒーにも選択肢があります。ワッフルを選ぶのと同じくらい、飲み物にも迷ってみたい。マサラでは、この一杯もゆっくり過ごしたくなる理由になっています。

I would put Masala into a Gifu day with some breathing room around it. Come for a meal, come for tea, or give yourself permission to make a waffle the main event. The attraction for me is how naturally the food, the atmosphere and the family-run character fit together.
